Ghanaian Hospitality Culture

I am currently in the UK. Liverpool, to be precise. I am enjoying the hospitality here which I find very beautiful. I do not lose sight of this wonderful opportunity Tsedaqah and its trustees has given me to be here in Liverpool. Their wonderful efforts are really appreciated by me and my family.

One thing I have realized here in the UK, which is common amongst the people, is that they welcome you with tea or coffee - whether you visit the office or the home. The people of Liverpool are very welcoming, friendly, and kind which is making my stay here very exciting. I am looking forward to more interesting and beautiful moments here in Liverpool.

Hospitality is a fine gesture which the Holy Bible approves of and encourages to be practised among ourselves. It even confers blessing on the host. Hospitality must play an essential role in the life of every Christian. Also, being hospitable is both an action and affection, in both receiving and loving the stranger.

The bible gives emphasis to hospitality and the practice of showing love and kindness to strangers. Below are some verses that throw extra weight on hospitality:

Hebrews 13:2 Do not forget to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. KJV

1 Peter 4:9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. KJV

Romans 12:13 Share with the Lord's people who are in need. NIV

The Holy Bible encourages us to act with joy and gladness without complaint when we are entertaining strangers - showing kindness, being generous and showing love to one another. When we are cheerful in hospitality our father in heaven will reward us, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Ghanaians are proud of their culture and love welcoming people from all over the world. Growing up, my parents taught me how to be hospitable, generous, friendly, welcoming, and how to be kind to people - even strangers.

In a country like Ghana, where visitors normally do not announce their visit ahead of time, hosts will yet take time out of their busy schedule and prepare to answer and receive them with genuine delight, subsequently suspending all imminent plans and fully devoting their time and attention to their visitors. Never will you be refused something to drink or eat, and never will you be asked what time you are leaving.

Ghanaian hospitality is renowned worldwide. Any visitor that comes to Ghana often applauds and commends us for our generosity, kindness, love, and the well-behaved manner with which we receive them. Arguably, Ghanaian hospitality is one of the best and unrivaled the world over, I should think. This makes me very proud of our culture, and very proud to be a Ghanaian.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being kind towards your Neighbour, especially a foreigner and by so doing, you might be entertaining an angel - as written in the bible.

Hospitality is simply an opportunity to show love and care, and I would like to encourage us to always be hospitable to one another for there is much blessing in it.
